Chemotherapy
Did you know that chemotherapy is not only used to treat certain types of cancer in people, but in pets as well? Cancer is a disease that is caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Chemotherapy is a common treatment of certain types of cancer, and is a medicine that can be administered by mouth, or injected in a vein or under the skin of an animal suffering from cancer.
Drs. Dunlap and Wood have numerous years of successful diagnosis and treatment of cancer in pets. Cancer can be identified by a physical exam, x-ray imaging or laboratory blood work, all of which can be performed at Animal Health Care Center. Our state-of-the-art facility has an enhanced digital x-ray system which produces much clearer images than were available in the past and can easily reveal cancerous areas in the body of an animal. Our laboratory has the ability to determine blood chemistry functions and complete blood counts (CBCs) in a matter of minutes. Diagnosing cancer in dogs and cats is not an easy task, and these precise instruments aid our doctors in determining if a pet may be suffering from cancer.
In the event cancer is diagnosed, safe and efficacious chemotherapy medications can be administered to the pet right here at our clinic. Dr. John Dunlap and Dr. Heather Wood each attend numerous lectures and classes throughout the United States to insure our clinic has the best medications in order to treat the animals of the Waynesboro, Virginia area.
Cancer is like any other disease, in the fact that earlier diagnosis can mean more effective treatment. Having your pet screened for cancer, as well as numerous other diseases is always a good idea.
